Variety of tomato very appreciated raw in salads for its sweetness, traditional in the Empordà orchards and that has been recovered in recent years. The pear tomato – Lycopersicon esculentum – is a large, slightly acidic tomato, with a spherical and flattened shape, and with protuberances on the surface. Inside it is compact and seedless. It has a markedly sweet taste. It is a delicate variety in terms of cultivation and needs a careful and continuous treatment. Its sweetness makes it ideal, when well ripe, for the preparation of sauces and preserves, although it is also consumed raw in salads or grilled.

Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A, C and K and minerals such as potassium and iron. They also provide fibre, water and antioxidants and benefit cardiovascular health by reducing cholesterol and blood pressure. They strengthen the immune system, eyesight, skin and digestion, as well as having a diuretic and antioxidant effect that combats cellular ageing.
