PGI Prades Potatoes
The potatoes covered by this Protected Geographical Indication are of the species Solanum tubesorum, a kennebec variety, with a caliber between 40 and 80 mm. These potatoes have a very smooth, hard and consistent skin. The flesh is whitish, with a consistent and floury texture, sweet and persistent taste and an aroma reminiscent of chestnuts. The long vegetative cycle of the Prades potato means that it only allows one annual harvest, in order to ensure greater quality and consistency. The Prades potato is suitable for all types of culinary preparations and its great consistency makes it very suitable for stews.
The climatic conditions of the soil and the altitude of the crops, at more than 1,000 m, at the foot of the Prades mountain range, in the Baix Camp region, as well as the long tradition in the cultivation of this tuber, whose importance dates from the nineteenth century, confer characteristics to the Prades potato.
